We Are Water Protectors, by Carole Lindstrom

A short, 40-page pictorial book for 2-6 year old children about the changes of earth impacting nature negatively. It is from the persecutive of “Water protectors”, typically a role for women in Ojibwe tribes. The book is written in poetic prose and really encourages children to take a stance in saving earth and its beautiful elements.

Example: Water is the first medicine.
It affects and connects us all . . .

The author couldn’t make it to an indigenous led protest about oil pipelines snaking through land at Standing Rock so found another way to create awareness.

I personally enjoyed the artwork, the premise, and the emotions it evokes about a cause. It got me curious about the Ojibwe tribe and the incident at Standing Rock. I spent If nothing else, this can be a great learning opportunity.

Takeaways:

  • Potentially new type of concepts for the age group
  • Need to explain the Dakota Access Pipeline situation to be able to answer questions about it
